    Barack Obama by Kehinde Wiley

Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of President Obama cemented his status in the contemporary art world as an artist that mixes Grand Manner portraiture traditions, intricate patterns and designs, and a vibrant, technicolor palette. His paintings, which most often depict contemporary African American subjects, examine visual codes for power and challenge expectations. This program explores the artist’s life and provides an overview of his works and inspiration.

  • Art Matters: Sculpture of Western Civilization - Part 1

    Wednesday Feb 28, 2024 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM

    ArtMatters: Sculpture of Western Civilization

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28 - 1:30—2:30 pm via Zoom

SCULPTURE of Western Civilization -Part 1 – Ancient times until 1900

Sculpture is the art of making real objects from many kinds of substances. It is a physical, sometimes complicated process, requiring many kinds of tools, chemical treatments, solvents, dyes, large equipment, and sometimes furnaces or kilns. It can be as monumental as a mountain, or as small as coin. Since sculpture exists in 3-dimensional space, with many different perspectives, including looking up from below, and down from above, it requires solving multiple compositional problems. Join us for the first part of a history of Human expression with sculpture, from ancient times until the modern era.

With Jane Blair of ArtMatters. Presented thanks to the support of the Friends of Carlisle Council on Aging and Friends of Gleason Public Library.

Part 1 will be presented on February 28th and Part 2 on March 6th; please register for each part separately.

    Please visit gleasonlibrary.org/events to register.
